“Poppy”, Midwest US

“I’ve never been so happy to be misgendered…I told my mom, This is the best way to get a job!”

“Poppy” was raised on a soybean farm in the midwest. She’s transgender and was struggling with a lot of anxiety and fear about her future. She came to Positively Focused because she wanted to find more confidence as she pursued her passion: photography.

As we worked through disempowering beliefs, mostly about herself as a trans person, Poppy came into the confidence she sought. So when she attended a creative conference, rose her hand from the audience to ask a question and was called, she didn’t feel at all insulted or appalled when the speaker on stage misgendered her.

Interestingly, when Poppy approached the speaker to get more information, the speaker apologized profusely. Then the speaker introduced Poppy to an art director…

Poppy had been working at a Coffee shop. She figured as a trans person, that’s all she could hope for, even though she wanted a job in her passion. She had sent out dozens of resumes, like many do who think “doing” is the way to get what they want…but with no success. Little did she know that what was about to happen next at the creative conference.

The art director took an interest in Poppy. A few weeks later, that director invited Poppy in and offered her a director’s assistant job.

Poppy was stunned. She couldn’t believe how effortlessly it happened. “I’ve never been so happy to be misgendered…I told my mom, This is the best way to get a job!”
